The Astronomical Society of Dharmaraja College successfully organized SAGITTARIUS 2026, an All Island Inter-school Astronomical Quiz Competition and Workshop. Held on June 4, 2026, this marked the third edition of the event following its initial launches in 2014 and 2019. The flagship program brought together over 300 contestants representing 26 invited schools across the island, continuing its legacy of fostering scientific curiosity and pushing the boundaries of astronomical knowledge among school students.
The competition concluded with remarkable performances across all stages. Ananda College Colombo, emerged as the 2026 Champions, taking the top spot in a closely contested final. Nalanda College, Colombo was the defending champions from both the 2014 and 2019 competitions secured the First Runner-up position, while Trinity College, Kandy, earned the title of Second Runners-up. Additionally, Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya Gampaha, delivered an outstanding practical performance to be crowned the 2026 Workshop Champions, rounding off a memorable celebration of academic excellence.
The event was graced by Dr. J. P. Liyanage, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Peradeniya, who served as the Chief Guest. Holding both a B.Sc. and a Ph.D. from the University of Colombo, Dr. Liyanage shared invaluable scientific expertise with the young audience, enriching both the competitive and educational segments of the day. The interactive workshop provided participants with hands-on learning and practical insights into complex astrophysical concepts, bridging classroom theories with modern observational science.
